How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with iCloud

If you back up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you’ll have a copy of your information to use in case your device is ever replaced, lost, or damaged.

  1. Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network.
  2. Go to Settings > [your name], and tap iCloud.

  3. Tap iCloud Backup.
  4. Tap Back Up Now. Stay connected to your Wi-Fi network until the process ends. Under Back Up Now, you’ll see the date and time of your last backup. If you get an alert that you don’t have enough iCloud storage space to complete the backup, follow the onscreen steps to buy more storage.

Automatically back up with iCloud Backup

Follow these steps to set up iCloud Backup to automatically back up your device each day:

  1. Make sure that iCloud Backup is turned on in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
  2. Connect your device to a power source.
  3. Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network.
  4. Make sure that your device’s screen is locked.
  5. If you get an alert says that you don’t have enough iCloud storage space to complete the backup, follow the onscreen steps to buy more storage.

Back up with the Finder

  1. On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, open a Finder window.
  2. Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable.
  3. If asked for your device passcode or to Trust This Computer, follow the onscreen steps. Get help if you forgot your passcode.
  4. Select your device on your computer. Learn what to do if your device doesn’t appear on your computer.
  5. If you want to save Health and Activity data from your device or Apple Watch, you need to encrypt your backup. Select the “Encrypt local backup” checkbox and create a memorable password.
    Save your password somewhere safe, because there’s no way to recover your backups without this password.
  6. Click Back Up Now.

Back up with iTunes

  1. On a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier, open iTunes.
  2. Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable.
  3. If asked for your device passcode or to Trust This Computer, follow the onscreen steps. Get help if you forgot your passcode.
  4. Select your device on your computer. Learn what to do if your device doesn’t appear on your computer.
  5. If you want to save Health and Activity data from your device or Apple Watch, you need to encrypt your backup. Select the “Encrypt [device] backup” checkbox and create a memorable password.
    Save your password somewhere safe, because there’s no way to recover your backups without this password.
  6. Click Back Up Now.

  1. On your Windows PC, open iTunes. If you don’t have it on your PC, download iTunes.
  2. Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable.
  3. If asked for your device passcode or to Trust This Computer, follow the onscreen steps. Get help if you forgot your passcode.
  4. Select your device in iTunes. Learn what to do if your device doesn’t appear on your computer.

  5. Click Summary.
  6. If you want to save Health and Activity data from your device or Apple Watch, you need to encrypt your backup. Select the “Encrypt local backup” checkbox and create a memorable password.
    Write down your password and store it somewhere safe, because there’s no way to recover your iTunes backups without this password.
  7. Click Back Up Now.

Back up your Mac with Time Machine

Learn how to create a backup of the files on your Mac.

Use Time Machine, the built-in backup feature of your Mac, to automatically back up your personal data, including apps, music, photos, email, and documents. Having a backup allows you to recover files that you later delete or can’t access. Learn how to restore your Mac from a backup.


Create a Time Machine backup

  1. Connect an external storage device, such as a USB or Thunderbolt drive. Learn more about backup disks that you can use with Time Machine.
  2. Open Time Machine preferences from the Time Machine menu  in the menu bar. Or choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Time Machine.
  3. Click Select Backup Disk.

  4. Select the name of your disk, then click Use Disk. Time Machine immediately begins making periodic backups—automatically and without further action by you.

If you want to start a backup manually, without waiting for the next automatic backup, choose Back Up Now from the Time Machine menu  in the menu bar.

Use the same menu to check the status of a backup or skip a backup in progress. For example, if a backup is underway, the menu shows how much of it is done. When a backup is not underway, the menu shows the date and time of the latest backup.
